The Blues Scale / Minor Blues Scale

The Blues Scale is a hexatonic, or six note, scale with the scale degrees 1 3 4 5 5 7. Since it contains a flatted third and a natural fifth, it's by definition a Minor scale and can also be called the Minor Blues Scale. Call it the Blues Scale or call it the Minor Blues Scale, it doesn't matter, they mean the same thing. Although it is in the Minor Family of chord and scale qualities, it can be played against chord progressions of any tonality (e.g. Major, Minor, Dominant). Doing so means notes in the scale will often not match notes in the chords they are played over, creating tension as they clash with notes in the chord progression. The sounds of these clashes are a very big part of Blues Scale's unique sound. Major Blues Scale Guitar Fretboard Patterns- Chart, Key of C (2)
