The Major 7th Guitar Arpeggio is derived from the Major Scale. It is simply a "Fancy" Major chord. See:

Scale Based Arpeggios: These have the same notes as the chords they are derived from; but are played like a scale. The notes are laid out in the numerical or alphabetical sequence of the notes that make them up (e.g. R, 3, 5, 7, or A, C#, E, G# etc.) rather than in the voicings of the various chord grips like the chord based arpeggios.
